The impact of Our Aim Foundation’s Education Program in Pakistan
Dunedin US – October 6th 2023 / Our AIM Foundation /
In Pakistan, the provision of quality education to all children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, has long been a pressing challenge. Despite efforts to improve enrolment and retention rates, progress in enhancing educational indicators in Pakistan has been slow. According to UNICEF, an estimated 22.8 million children aged 5-16 remain out of school, representing a staggering 44 percent of this age group’s population.
Notably, Pakistan currently holds the dubious distinction of having the world’s second-highest number of out-of-school children. Within this staggering statistic lies the reality that 5 million children aged 5-9 are not enrolled in schools, and as children grow older, this number doubles, with a staggering 11.4 million adolescents between 10-14 years old not receiving a formal education. Equally concerning are the stark disparities in education access based on gender, socio-economic status, and geographic location. For instance, in the province of Sindh, a heart-wrenching 52 percent of the poorest children, particularly girls, are denied the opportunity of an education. Meanwhile, in Balochistan, a staggering 78 percent of girls face the same fate.
At the heart of this educational crisis lies the mission of the Our Aim Foundation, which stands to make a positive impact in the midst of these grim statistics. The organization is dedicated to transforming the educational landscape of Pakistan, striving to ensure that every child, regardless of their socio-economic background or gender, has access to quality education. One of the most poignant success stories that underscore the impact of the Our Aim Foundation’s work is that of Sumera Niaz, a 13-year-old girl who defied the odds to pursue her education.
Sumera’s Story
Sumera had previously attended a private school but was compelled to leave due to the exorbitant tuition fees, a financial burden that was increasingly difficult for her family to bear. At that juncture, Sumera’s education appeared to be an unattainable dream. Nevertheless, Sumera’s mother, Rabia Basri, remained resolute in her determination to see her daughter succeed and brought her to the Our Aim Foundation’s school.
Since her enrollment in the Our Aim Foundation’s program in 2021, Sumera’s life has undergone a remarkable transformation. Today, she is a diligent 8th-grade student who has exhibited outstanding progress in subjects like English, Islamiyat, and Mathematics. Sumera’s academic performance has witnessed a remarkable upturn, and she now carries herself with the kind of self-assuredness that enables her to actively participate in various school events. Her story is not merely a narrative of academic achievement but also a testament to her personal growth, enhanced self-esteem, and burgeoning social development.
Impact on Sumera’s Family
The Our Aim Foundation’s educational initiative has had a profound influence not only on Sumera but also on her family’s perception of education. Initially, Sumera’s father, Niaz Ahmed Khan, held reservations about her education, influenced by certain cultural constraints. However, Rabia Basri’s unwavering determination and Sumera’s success have together led to a shift in attitude within the family. They now understand the paramount importance of education, and this awareness has permeated beyond their immediate family to influence their extended family and neighbours. Sumera’s inspiring journey has become a catalyst for inspiring more girls to enroll in school.
Economic Empowerment
One of the most striking outcomes of Sumera’s participation in the Our Aim Foundation’s program is the alleviation of the financial burden on her family. The exorbitant fees of her previous private school had precipitated her withdrawal from education. However, the foundation’s comprehensive support, including access to quality education and essential materials, has not only ensured her educational pursuits but also contributed to improving the living conditions of her family. Sumera’s family now benefits from having two meals a day, a significant improvement compared to their previous single meal daily.
While Sumera’s story serves as an inspiring testament to the impact of the Our Aim Foundation’s work, it is imperative to acknowledge that Pakistan still grapples with substantial challenges in ensuring access to education for all. Socio-cultural, economic, and supply-related barriers continue to impede access and retention, especially for marginalized groups. Addressing these challenges requires concerted efforts, including adequate financing, rigorous policy enforcement, and equitable implementation.
Join the Cause
The Our Aim Foundation’s educational program exemplifies how unwavering determination, community support, and strategic interventions can effect transformative change in the lives of children and their families. Sumera Niaz’s journey, alongside those of countless other beneficiaries, vividly illustrates the potential of education to break the cycle of poverty and empower individuals and communities. While challenges remain, organizations like the Our Aim Foundation provide a blueprint for a brighter future where every child’s right to education is not just recognized but actively realized.
