Empowering Mchinji Youth Through Sports in Malawi

Building a Safe Space for Youth Sports

Sports have the power to change lives, build confidence, and bring communities together. In Mchinji District, Malawi, Our Aim Foundation is taking a meaningful step toward youth empowerment through sports by supporting the Holistic Community Centre in Tongozala. Established in April 2019, the centre began with a playground for young children and a volleyball pitch for local youth. These spaces continue to serve the community, but the need for a larger, more versatile sports field has grown.

Our Aim Foundation now aims to develop a multi-purpose sports field that will support football, netball, volleyball, traditional dances, and local games. This project is designed to create a safe and active environment where children, youth, and community members can participate in regular physical activities, structured training, friendly matches, and tournaments.

Inspiring Young Athletes Through Football and Community Events

Football remains one of the most loved sports in Malawi and across Africa. From local community matches to the excitement of the Football World Cup, the game inspires young people to dream bigger, work harder, and believe in their talent. By building a proper sports field in Mchinji, this initiative will give young athletes the space and support they need to improve their skills and participate in organized football training.

The project has clear and measurable goals. Over a period of three years, the initiative aims to increase physical activity among 100,000 participants. During the current 18-month project phase, the target is to engage 40,000 participants through sports activities, community events, and training sessions. This will help promote healthier lifestyles and reduce inactivity among young people.

Another important goal is to train young sports leaders. Within three years, at least 50 young leaders will receive training in sports-related skills, leadership, coaching, and mentorship. During the 18-month project period, 25 sports leaders will be trained. These young leaders will play an important role in guiding teams, supporting youth development, and encouraging positive community participation.

The project will also organize four major community sports events each year, with one event every quarter. These events will bring together players, families, spectators, and community members. Through football matches, netball competitions, local games, and cultural performances, the events will promote unity, teamwork, and community pride.

Creating Leaders, Equal Opportunities, and Lasting Impact

In addition, the initiative will identify talented young athletes and provide them with specialized coaching. Over three years, at least 50 promising athletes will receive focused training, while 25 outstanding athletes will be mentored during the current project phase. This support can help young players improve their performance and possibly pursue future opportunities in football and other sports.

Gender participation is also a key part of the project. Our Aim Foundation will ensure up to 50% participation from girls and young women in all sports activities. By encouraging equal access to football, netball, leadership training, and community events, the project will promote inclusion, confidence, and empowerment for all.

The Mchinji youth sports project is more than just a sports field. It is an investment in health, leadership, talent development, and community unity. With structured training, organized teams, youth leagues, and regular sports events, the Holistic Community Centre can become a hub for positive change in Tongozala and beyond.

Through this initiative, Our Aim Foundation is helping young people discover their potential, build discipline, and stay active. Just as the Football World Cup brings nations together through the love of football, this project will bring the Mchinji community together through sports, hope, and opportunity.
